McLeans Island Golf Club

A Course Built on an Ancient Riverbed

Just outside Christchurch, McLeans Island Golf Club offers a golfing experience unlike any other in New Zealand. Set on an historic riverbed alongside the Waimakariri River, the 18-hole course is defined by its tree-lined fairways, wide-open countryside, and naturally free-draining soils. These unique conditions have long been one of the club’s strengths, providing firm playing surfaces and year-round enjoyment for members and visitors alike.

When Aging Infrastructure Began to Show

Behind the scenes, however, the club was facing a growing challenge. Much of the irrigation pipe network had been in service for more than 50 years, and leaks were becoming increasingly common and difficult to locate within the riverbed profile. At the same time, irrigation management relied on a block-designed system operated through satellite controllers without central control, requiring significant manual programming and oversight. During the irrigation season, irrigation-related issues regularly demanded a meaningful portion of the maintenance team’s time and attention.

A Vision for Smarter Water Management

Recognizing the need for modernization, the club set out to create an irrigation system that would support the course well into the future. The goal was not simply to replace aging infrastructure, but to improve operational efficiency, provide greater control across the course, and give staff the ability to monitor and manage irrigation in real time. Balancing these ambitions with financial responsibility, the project was carefully planned and executed in phases, allowing the club to complete the renovation while remaining debt free.

A Transformation That Changed Daily Operations

Completed between 2022 and 2025, the phased renovation introduced Rain Bird® IC System™ technology throughout the course and brought individual sprinkler control to greens, fairways, and tees. The addition of Rain Bird CirrusPRO™ Central Control provided a new level of visibility, allowing staff to remotely monitor, diagnose, and adjust irrigation from virtually anywhere. For Superintendent Jared Wilson, the impact has been significant. The combination of individual sprinkler control and real-time remote access has transformed how irrigation is managed day to day, giving the team more control, greater flexibility, and more time to focus on delivering exceptional playing conditions.

“The individual sprinkler control along with being able to remotely access the system in real-time have been a game changer for this course.” — Jared Wilson, Superintendent, McLeans Island Golf Club.
