Bernardus Golf
Championship Conditions Through Precision Irrigation
Set among the sandy heathlands of the Netherlands, Bernardus Golf has become one of Europe’s premier championship venues. Known for its fescue greens, expansive bunkering, and natural rough areas, the course demands a precise agronomic approach to maintain consistent playing conditions throughout the year. Supported by a dedicated greenkeeping team, every decision is focused on balancing playability, turf health, and efficient water use.
Navigating a Demanding Landscape
While Bernardus benefits from excellent drainage thanks to its sandy soil profile, retaining moisture during dry periods presents an ongoing challenge. Wind exposure further complicates course management by increasing evapotranspiration rates, influencing sprinkler performance, and creating uneven moisture patterns across greens, tees, approaches, and fairways. Maintaining consistent playing conditions requires constant attention and precise irrigation management.
The club’s previous Stratus™ II irrigation system had served the course reliably for many years, but evolving expectations around course conditioning highlighted opportunities to improve communication, diagnostics, system visibility, and operational responsiveness. Managing performance and identifying issues increasingly required manual intervention, limiting efficiency and flexibility.
As the venue continued to establish itself as a championship destination, the team recognized the need for a more connected and data-driven irrigation platform that could support both daily operations and future tournament preparation.
A modern irrigation platform built for performance
To meet these evolving demands, Bernardus upgraded to the Rain Bird IC System™ with CirrusPRO™ Central Control. Implemented in two phases to minimize disruption and allow the course to remain operational, the new system delivers direct communication with field components, enhanced diagnostics, and real-time visibility into system performance.
Working closely with contractor Smits Veldhoven and Rain Bird, the project was carefully planned around daily maintenance requirements and course play. The upgraded platform enables the irrigation team to respond more quickly to changing conditions, troubleshoot issues more efficiently, and make informed irrigation decisions based on field observations, weather data, moisture monitoring, and system feedback.
The result is a more responsive, reliable irrigation system that supports precise water application while integrating seamlessly into the club’s agronomic management strategy.
Greater confidence, precision, and control
Today, Bernardus Golf benefits from greater flexibility and confidence in day-to-day irrigation management. Enhanced diagnostics and improved communication reduce uncertainty, while faster response times help the team address issues before they impact course presentation. Greater system visibility allows greenkeepers to better understand system performance and make more informed adjustments across the property.
The upgrade has also strengthened the club’s moisture management program. By combining moisture readings with weather station data, visual assessments, and irrigation system information, the team can identify dry areas, target applications more accurately, and avoid unnecessary water use. This data-driven approach is particularly valuable during periods of drought, high temperatures, and wind exposure, where conditions can change rapidly across the course.
For the Bernardus greenkeeping team, the value extends beyond technology alone. The Rain Bird IC System and CirrusPRO platform provide the foundation needed to support championship-level course conditioning, improve water efficiency, and maintain resilient, consistent playing surfaces throughout the year.
