Choosing Rain Bird: How Hoiana Shores Golf Course Elevates Its Playing Surfaces
For the fifth consecutive year, Hoiana Shores Golf Course has been voted the best golf course in Vietnam and ranked 12th in all of Asia. Located in the Quang Nam Province, Hoiana Shores spans over 7,000 yards and offers breathtaking views of the untouched coastline, Eastern Sea, and Cham Islands. The 18-hole course is designed for golfers of all levels and boasts an intelligent irrigation system that reflects its commitment to excellence.
Superior Irrigation Technology
Long Nguyen, the superintendent of Hoiana Shores, emphasized the superiority of the Rain Bird IC System™ over traditional Satellite systems. “The IC System is a far simpler installation; it doesn’t require any power line nor hot or cold wires compared to the Satellite system’s complications,” Nguyen explained. The traditional Satellite systems involve extensive wiring, leading to higher costs and complicated repairs, risking turf health due to delays.
Efficient and Aesthetic
In contrast, the IC System’s minimal wiring and straightforward installation not only enhance the aesthetic appeal by eliminating unsightly Satellite boxes but also ensure efficient water distribution and conservation. Nguyen pointed out, “The IC System allows for precise water adjustments for each rotor, ensuring optimal water use. Water is the most essential nutrient for living things, and using water intelligently is one of the best ways to conserve it.” The system’s efficiency extends to diagnostics, with daily checks via CirrusPRO™ Central Control software that pinpoint rotor issues and their exact locations on the course map. “You find a problem and fix it in just 30 minutes,” Nguyen added.
Adaptability in Extreme Conditions
The summer months at Hoiana Shores bring extreme heat and high winds, making the adaptability of the IC System crucial. Nguyen highlighted the system’s versatility, which allows adjustments to irrigation schedules based on changing wind directions, heat, and dryness. The ability to control the irrigation system anytime and anywhere via CirrusPRO on a tablet or phone significantly enhances their operations. “We have a big touch screen attached to the wall in the irrigation room. It’s a great tool for training and system control,” Nguyen said. This user-friendly interface enables the irrigation crew, regardless of their experience in golf or English proficiency, to manage the system efficiently.
Innovative Testing and Results
Nguyen also shared insights from recent tests comparing their old 950 series rotors with the new 952 series. Conducted on their first green (1,100 sqm), the tests showed that the 952 series provided an average application rate of 6.61 mm/hr more, allowing more precise adjustments to watering cycles. The finer water curtains from the 952 series improved water distribution uniformity from 81% to 87%.
Commitment to Sustainability
While the IC System is central to their irrigation strategy, the positive impact of Rain Bird’s CirrusPRO Central Control software cannot be overlooked. Nguyen praised its intuitive interface, which is accessible on multiple devices and supports multiple languages, allowing crew members to operate the software in Vietnamese. Hoiana Shores’ dedication to sustainability and water conservation aligns perfectly with Rain Bird’s commitment to The Intelligent Use of Water®. The advanced technology of the IC System paired with CirrusPRO Central Control software significantly contributes to the course’s goal of being designated as a GEO Certified Facility.
As Long Nguyen continues to praise Rain Bird’s products and support team, it is clear that with the shared passion and determination from both sides, the course’s excellence will continue to grow. May Hoiana Shores extend their winning streak and keep setting new standards in golf course management.

Conway Farms Golf Club
Chicago’s Conway Farms is a modern classic designed by Tom Fazio three decades ago. But, as with many courses of that era, time had taken its toll on bunkers and green complexes, and infrastructure like the original golf course irrigation system had aged. Here’s how they gave it all a new life.
