Challenges and Decision to Renovate

Located near Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon in northeastern Spain, Golf Los Lagos originally opened as a 9-hole course in 1997, expanding to 18 holes under Ramón Espinosa’s design in 2002. However, maintaining the course to meet members’ expectations became increasingly challenging due to an outdated irrigation system installed in 2001. The aging system faced numerous issues, including obsolete field controllers and unavailable spare parts, making communication and updates difficult. Constant repairs were required due to erosion of PVC piping and custom-made metal joints.

Head Greenkeeper Miguel Monguilod highlights the turning point:

“Irrigation consultant Kiko Allo perfectly understood our needs and supported us with the decision to renovate, which became urgent as the rate of breakdowns exceeded repairs. We evaluated various systems, taking advice from other clubs and our own experience with Rain Bird products, which guided our decision.”

Implementation of the New Irrigation System

The installation of a new Rain Bird® IC System™ with CirrusPRO™ Central Control software and 1,200 Rain Bird rotors marked a new chapter for Golf Los Lagos. Completed in April 2024 by contractor Green Natur, with support from the Rain Bird® Global Sales Plan (GSP) team, the project included the installation of Rain Bird® 702 and 752 Series rotors. The trenchless machinery used by Green Natur minimized course damage, ensuring minimal disruption to play. Communication between the contractor and club members was key to maintaining course accessibility during installation.

Positive Outcomes and Future Prospects

The new irrigation system is expected to enhance grass quality, playability, and significantly reduce water usage, electricity costs, and repair efforts. Monguilod praised Rain Bird’s support throughout the process:

“Rain Bird answered all our questions, made multiple visits, and provided great support. We are in a unique geographical location with water sourced directly from a natural aquifer, allowing us efficient water use without restrictions.”

Although it is early to fully evaluate the renovation’s impact, the course has already seen improvements in playability and aesthetics. The greenkeeping team now has more time to focus on other areas, and members are noticing the benefits of the investment.

Golf Los Lagos stands ready to share its renovation experience with other clubs considering similar projects, emphasizing the positive outcomes already evident.
