The Rain Bird® IC System™ and rotors with CirrusPRO™ control were chosen as being the best option for irrigating what is a delicate site, allowing for layouts to be changed easily with minimal excavations. In order to get every hole ‘just right’ it was important to know that minor relocations during the build phase could be easily accomplished.
“We’ve amended our irrigation process and saved hours of staff time. Previously, I had two people hand-watering for six hours, four days a week, so that’s fifty to sixty hours a week saved, and that’s been one of the most significant benefits. With the new system in place, grass cover hasn’t been lost at all this year and we’re now seeing grass recover, even with the recent drought.” — Course Manager, David Coull
“When we started thinking about replacing our 30-year-old irrigation system, it was clear to us that it had to be a system that offered the latest technical capabilities and used our water resources efficiently. It quickly became obvious that our nearly 30-year-old satellite control system could no longer keep up and what Stock Beregnungstechnick and Rain Bird proposed with Rain Bird® IC System™ technology convinced us immediately. Having the ability to control each sprinkler and give each area of the golf course exactly the amount of water it needs means no more wasted water and also means a saving in electricity costs for running pumps, which is not insignificant given the rising price of electricity. All these benefits, combined with fantastic work completed by Stock Beregnungstechnick have given us an irrigation system that allows us to look to the future efficiently and without worry.”
“What we’re dealing with at Miklagard is literally two courses in one – so the Rain Bird hybrid system allows us to manage the new and the old technologies together in a smarter, more efficient way”.
“In the first phase from October 2020 through to March 2021 we worked with the client and golf architects to turn what’s a large scale, very forward-thinking approach into reality, on site and in the ground. It’s been very exciting and refreshing to see investment on this scale. The irrigation system is ultra-future-proof and uses the very latest technology including 65” screens for mapping course irrigation."
"The renovation has given our reputation a real boost. With improved coverage, our MacKenzie course is more efficient in terms of water use and looks very well presented; our members are delighted with the results. With climate change making rainfall so unpredictable, what we’ve done so far improves the course and has an impact on the future sustainability of our club.”

Utilizing Rain Bird’s unique capabilities allowed the course to be fully maintained and played throughout the project. The new irrigation areas were brought online as the project progressed, with full IC control while also allowing decoder-controlled areas to remain fully operational. Upgrading to IC has provided complete control, two-way, real time communication and peace of mind. The system that is now in place is much more efficient, with more effective coverage from the same amount of water.

“It’s that public display, that we’re out there every day, that really drives me. We don’t want to put a bad foot forward, there’s no redo button for us. It’s a playing surface that we’re producing and water’s the biggest part of that. Nobody wants to play on something that’s soft, everybody wants green, firm and fast. And there’s a very fine line to that.” — Stephen Rabideau, CGCS, Director of Golf Courses, Winged Foot Golf Club
