The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America reports that only 2% of its approximately 16,000 members are female. Building diversity in the golf maintenance profession is important. Many of the male volunteers invited were from local courses and could travel to the site easily. To get more females, they would have to be brought to the course from some distance. Most likely the female volunteers could get the time off of work, but the cost to travel to the event would be prohibitive. After receiving the list of volunteers from The Olympic Club, Rain Bird arranged the flights of the female volunteers traveling from as far away as Florida and the northeast. Here are some of their stories.
